Towing Speed Limits

Here in the UK we have different speed limits depending on what type of road you are travelling on. We do not differentiate on the size of the vehicle been towed, so you can be towing the smallest trailer tent or the largest twin axle, the speed limits will be the same. The size of the tow vehicle doesn’t come into it either.

Single Carriageway

While towing on a single carriageway the maximum speed limit is:

50 MPH

Dual Carriageway

While towing on a dual carriageway the maximum speed limit is:

60 MPH

Motorway

While towing on a motorway the maximum speed limit is:

60 MPH

It is also important to note that while towing you are not allowed in the outside lane. This also applies to vehicles that have their speed restricted to 68mph or under.


Motorhome Speed Limits

The speed limits for motorhomes all depends on the unladen weight of your motorhome. The golden figure here is 3.05t. The definition of Unladen Weight on the governments website is:

The unladen weight of any vehicle is the weight of the vehicle when it’s not carrying any passengers, goods or other items.

It includes the body and all parts normally used with the vehicle when it’s used on a road

It doesn’t include the weight of:

Fuel

Batteries in an electric vehicle

Motorhomes under 3.05t

Single Carriageway

The maximum speed limit of a motorhome under 3.05t on a single carriageway is:

60 MPH

Dual Carriageway

The maximum speed limit of a motorhome under 3.05t on a dual carriageway is:


Motorway

The maximum speed limit of a motorhome under 3.05t on a motorway is:

70 MPH

Motorhomes over 3.05t

Single Carriageway

The maximum speed limit of a motorhome over 3.05t on a single carriageway is:

50 MPH

Dual Carriageway

The maximum speed limit of a motorhome over 3.05t on a dual carriageway is:

60 MPH

Motorway

The maximum speed limit of a motorhome over 3.05t on a motorway is:

70 MPH

Other information

If you are towing a trailer with a motorhome then the towing speed apply.

These limits are the maximum speeds and not target speeds.

Any other signed speed limits over-rule these speed limits.

Always drive at a speed that you are comfortable with depending on your experience. Also take it to consideration the condition of the road and the weather you are driving in.
